 History

The Grrrls with Guitars Showcase is one of the longest running & most successful songwriter showcases in Vancouver. Started in 1994 – by singer/songwriter & Producer/Organizer Nadine Davenport - Grrrls With Guitars called the infamous Railway Club 'home' for 8 years. Over 500 women songwriters at the local event, graced the stage at the Rail to packed houses & media accolades. As Host & ‘one of the grrrls’ – Nadine designed the showcase to be either a 'featured artist' evening or a 'round robin' style event & always, an eclectic & interactive night of entertainment.

Two Compilation CD's were put together in June of 1999 & 2001. Compilation Vol 1 CD features 12 of Vancouver's women songwriters, including; KINNIE STARR, LINDA MCRAE ex-member of Spirit of The West & BONNIE STE-CROIX  who is currently getting airplay on Clear FM in Vancouver. Volume 2 features; 16 Artists including; ADRIENNE PIERCE who recently signed with NETTWERK Records.

Since both releases, there have been 3 successful Tours with 4-5 of these Artists throughout BC, Alberta & Saskatchewan in 2000 & 2001. The GRRRLS WITH GUITARS Showcase has also performed at many Summer Festivals including; the Vancouver Folk Music Festival & in Yellowknife at ‘Folk On the Rocks’ Festival.

The CD’s have received some great print reviews and have had positive support from CBC Radio across Canada. As well, the 'Grrrls' CD Charted at No. 41 on the National Top 50 College Radio. GWG Vol. 2 was be sent out to Canadian College Radio this last Fall ('04)

Since the last live show of Grrrls With Guitars, the series, at the Railway Club in May of 2002, Compilation 1 & 2 have been available at many Vancouver CD & Music Stores for sale locally & online worldwide, from CD Baby.

A 10 Year Reunion Show for GRRRLS WITH GUITARS then took place on Nov 25th / 2004 at the ANZA CLUB in Vancouver.  It was a co-production with the very successful ‘girlgig productions’ and Grrrls with Guitars. Over 250 people attended this 3 hour ‘who’s who’ show of Vancouver Women Songwriters that have been involved in many facets of Grrrls With Guitars from Touring Artists, many of the 30 Compilation CD recording Artists and over 15 alumni Artists on stage all celebrating 10 years of GRRRLS WITH GUITARS !

Since the Reunion, Grrrls With Guitars has been blessed with a new local venue to call home. The regular local showcase will call RIME on Commercial a place to feature many of Vancouver’s best Singer-Songwriter talent. The rotating showcase appears every 2 months on the 3rd Thursday of the month.

In addition to some new digs, the final touches on another Compilation CD are being done. Grrrls With Guitars Volume 3 is scheduled to be released in Oct 7th 2005 on Maximum /Universal.

An all-Indie grassroots effort since it’s inception the project will now receive huge promotional leverage & increased sales potential. The series has 2 compilation CD’s previously released; GWG Vol. 1 (1999) and Vol. 2 (2001). Both Volume 1 & 2 will also be re-issued on the Maximum/Universal.

In Nov ’06 Grrrls With Guitars released Volume 3 on the Maximum Music and Universal Music Canada label. The collection 16 tracks strong celebrates the diversity of some of the finest BC/Yukon women songwriters of today featuring Nettwerk recording artists Po’ Girl, Juno nominee Kim Barlow and Maximum recording artist Christa Couture.
